Today is Earth Day. I spent the day doing things that I think about doing but just haven't gotten around to it...riding my bike instead of driving to some of my dog client's houses, bought 2 reusable canvas bags from the grocery store, took a bag down to the park and picked up trash, among a few others. It's a refreshing feeling, so I hope to at least start having a few "greener" habits.

Try it, just one little thing and see how it feels. Bring 2 bags when you walk your dog-one for your dog and one for little bits of trash you might find along the way. Buy 1 energy saver lightbulb. Collect magazines and newspapers in a bag and take them to a paper recycle bin.

So in the spirit of the day, any artwork that I sell this week I'd like to dontate 25% of the total to an environmental organization of the buyer's choice. Thank you for checking in and have a good week!

I'm in a groove where I'm doing quicker "sketches," no planning or thinking while making. The more my brain gets involved, the less I get done and the less fun I have while doing it. Our schedules are so random so posting is too. I thought I'd take a little break from the site; turns out not having to create makes it easier for me to do so. I don't like schedules or deadlines, I guess for me they get in the way of the spontaneity of art. Also, I am turning back to where I feel comfortable for a bit--pencil and paper.

I feel terrible for not posting the last few weeks, I wanted so much to have this painting done but the more I worked to just finish it, the more I needed to make it right. These tulips have been waiting to be finished for months and months, a very belated present. As I'm nearing completion I'm really proud of the work I've put into it. Just putting the finishing touches on a few more stems and patching up the background so its a nice solid baby blue (I think the color isn't quite true on the photo). I've also worked to send out two more science illustration applications as backup plans, anxious to hear back soon. Thank you for those who still check up on the site even when my posts have been few and far between.

Spring is just around the corner!I know a lot of people are excited for the change in season and for the change in temperature.I personally don't mind the snow or cold weather but I know Iam the odd one out.I hope you enjoy the tulips this week. This creature is an Axolotl or "Mexican Walking Fish". The Axolotl is an amphibian, more specifically, a salamander. But, he's kind of like a fish... and kind of like a cartoon. He reminds me of a Pokemon! haha.

This is another portrait of my beautiful grandma when she was young. She passed away 15 years ago but her presence still remains as well as sweet memories. This was her birthday and she would've been 80. I wonder sometimes what she would be like and what she'd think of me now if she were still around. This portrait was done in light washes of color on purpose. I'm currently finishing my tulips painting for a good friend this week. I think you will see more tulips in the future because I love looking at them and I like what they represent--they are one of the first flowers of spring.

Don't you just live for your weekends?Friday is my favorite day of the week, hands down!Last friday I had a weird freak lower back problem and had to stay in bed for almost three days straight.Not good.I hate wasting my weekend days since that is the time I get 'stuff' done.Believe me I snuck stuff in...a load of laundry...cat grooming...this silly little pig painting.Again, two weeks in a row of some of my, shall we say-lowbrow work- is all I have for you.Little piggy made me feel better though.Sometimes, as long as art makes you feel good then I think it has served its purpose.Please feel free to browse our gallery pages for other works.Find the links below our names on the left side of the page.

I've been working on this painting for quite a long time, putting it away when I didn't like the direction it was going in, picking it back up and spending a lot of time with it. I think it's quite close to completion now, a few splotches here and there and I will be satisfied. This is a commissioned piece for a friend of mine, one of the few photos of him and his father...it had been Photoshoped a bit-a "claw" hand put in, a few old cars and some people edited out or covered with grass. It's really a special painting and I hope it turns out just the way I would like. The colors in this picture aren't the best so I may try posting a better shot later on.

On Tuesday I was in Chicago for about 16 hours. I went for a workshop for work on becoming a Management Coach. While there the airport shut down due to the weather, and I got to kill several long, slightly painful, hours sitting in the airport food court with my old store manager. But some good came out of it too. Deedee pointed out to me that I am really not a "lifer" in the retail world.

She pointed out to me that I have been letting work cloud my real life and that I'm not living my life the way a 25 year old single person should. I'm not having fun, I'm not making mistakes, I'm not living life on the edge. She also reminded me that I care about the world in a much bigger way. That I really care about, and feel I can change and have an impact on national and global issues in a way that most people don't.

So then I was in the shower tonight and I was thinking to myself about a promise of sorts I made just after Christmas. I kind of vowed to myself that I would never work another Christmas in retail. Because, honestly, it killed me a little inside this year. It took some things away from me deep down inside, and I don't ever want that to happen again. So I was thinking about if I start putting away a little more in my savings account I could quit my job around mid-November and go after my art full time.

While shampooing I was thinking about how I am close enough to Detroit and Ann Arbor that I could start getting into the Gallery circuit, get out, meet people, see what's happening. And then I could spend December/January/February just painting and painting and painting and be ready for spring and summer art festivals. And that's when it hit me... I don't want to sell art for a living. I don't want to do it at all. I really like this little website, and I really like selling a few pieces to family and friends... but it's still retail. And it's worse, because at work I'm just selling clothes. With my art, I'm selling little pieces of myself. I don't want to compromise and paint things that will sell as opposed to things that I am interested in. This was a pretty huge moment for me.

Now sure, figuring out what you don't want to do next is a long tedious path towards figuring out what you do want to do. But it seems to be the only path that is working right now, so I'm going to stick with it. I'll keep listing things I don't want to do until I figure out exactly what it is I do want to try. Hopefully the list will be narrowed down by November.... but maybe just working on the list will make getting through another holiday in retail possible. Only time will tell.

As for my artwork this week, it's a drawing that is taped up to the wall in my living room. I did it my senior year of high school. A transfer student from California brought in this bronze with plastic holly wrapped around it. That was also the first day I ever saw a blood orange, and I was the only person at our table willing to try it. (They're now my favorite). I chose this piece because to me it holds on to that courage. I was drawing a nude in a high school classroom, while eating a blood orange that horrified all my friends.

Maybe by this time next year I'll be sitting on my deck in California, eating fresh oranges from the local farmer's market, thinking back about when I was trying to figure out what to do next.

It's been a long week/end. I agree with Rachel...it's Superbowl weekend and I think I'll post something that is older work.Though, I was really getting sick of hearing about stupid Tom Brady, so I was kind of cheering for NY.Sorry Rach.
Can I just end my blog entry with a funny story about this weekend and then just call it a post?Nate,my mom, my uncle, and I went to the DIA yesterday.We had a really great time seeing the new arrangement of the collection.As we were leaving we decided to make a quick stop in the Dutch Masters room.Nate grabbed my arm and said, "Do you see that guy over there?".I turned around and Marilyn Manson starring intensly at some Dutch work.So....I told my mom who quickly told my uncle.My uncle went right up to him and had a little conversation(the three of us ran around the corner to hide).Anyway, he didn't really admit to being who he was but we did pass the Filmore and he is performing tonight according to their sign.I don't know too many other guys who look like Manson, have a cane, top hat and platform shoes....

I'm still trying to get inspiration for my next big body of work.I'm looking at new sources and trying new techniques. I found a magazine with an article about a family and their home and they had a painting in their kitchen that was amazing.It didn't have an artists or title listed.
I emulated the piece and made my own changes and touches as well.The end result is the diptych below. I cannot take credit for the whole thing, but I translated it into a style of my own.I think it's really hard nowadays to make a totally unique piece of art work. We're always taking ideas and bits and pieces from things we see that others have made.Hopefully this painting will lead me to the next big idea.

My post this week is a piece that many of you have seen before. I went back and reworked many areas on this piece. I added a few more layers of color in the background and re blended areas on the vase.I think it added some subtlety that might be better enjoyed in person than from a picture of a picture.Anyway, sometimes you have to acknowledge when a piece just isn't right and go back in and fix it.

The past couple months I've been spending a lot of time thinking about my future. I have always been unsure of what I wanted to do in terms of a "career" and how far to take my art background. I wondered what would it be like to go in a completely different direction; I had gotten great grades in science in high school and have always been really interested in nature. It's so hard to make art a career especially in Michigan it seems. Well I applied and got into the zoology/environmental biology program at MSU which is really exciting. When got to talking to some people about my new plans and ideas it was suggested I look into scientific or medical illustration. I found some fantastic sites and realized it could be the absolute perfect fit for my interests. I could study and draw animals and plants and shells...and get paid for it! So I'm in the final stages of a really long application for a killer graduate program at UC-Santa Cruz for scientific illustration. Finishing up a few more relevant pieces for my portfolio which is how the snail drawing came about. Keeping my fingers crossed!

My students actually make me create art. Isn't that a little backwards? But with a class period consisting of 2 students, and about 3-5 "troublemakers" kicked out of other hours, we spend a blissful hour of our day talking, drawing and begging " Ms.O" to "...make/draw/paint this..." for them. This particular tiny class consists of a few extremely gifted kids, who are willing to trade work with me.

Teaching is not an easy job, (especially at an alternative high school) but teaching art has been my only career choice since the age of three. I have been making my own art all my life. When I was 10, my grandmother got me into a private art class where I studied under Robert Michmerhuizen for the next 8 years of my life, 2 hours a week. He encouraged my ambitions, and in 2006 I got my teaching degree from Adrian College.

Currently, I teach, paint, and draw. Lately I've been getting into mural projects in the west michigan area as well. The drawings shown have all been sold, but I do take commissions. I am willing to travel to do murals (June through August, of course!)

It seems the holiday rush is nearly over. Only one more holiday and then we're all sadly back to work,and sad glances at our credit card bills. The paintings I gave as gifts were well recieved so that is good.
I hope that Rachel and Abbey all managed to make lots of extra work over our break?I started one new piece and revisited an old one to make improvements.

So I haven't had a post for the past two weeks, but this is what I've been working on (among other things.) It is a very small painting, but I don't really like doing people so it was hard! I've been getting some works framed and out as Christmas gifts so that was nice.

Working retail during the Holidays really brought me down this year. I finally finished my shopping and got everything wrapped. I was really starting to feel like a Grinch there for a while, but I've had a couple days off and that has really helped!

I have taken my grandmother's advice and decided to see what I can come up with dealing with fish. This week my heart was stolen by this little Boar Fish. I strongly suggest you click on the picture to see it full size because I think his beauty is in the details. This little guy lives deep in the ocean, but is only 50-100 mm long! But his jaws look so FIERCE!

So things are still crazy I must say, and not only have a dropped my life savings into my car but my computer has also died...Needless to say I'm using my parents computer to post my art early this week.Isn't there a quote about poverty being the mother of invention? Well, this painting is a Christmas present.Resourceful, no?I guess that is a benefit of being an artist.
Hope everyone is falling hard into the holiday season!!! I know I have.

My name is Aaron Tang but most of my friends call me "Tango". It comes from gym class in High School. You know when you have to put your first initial in front of your last name, well, I had "Tang,A" written on the back of my shirt instead, which eventually left people saying TANGO. Maybe it derived from people cheering for me while running a drill, "Go Tang, Go Tang, Go Tan-go, Tango..."

I am an industrial design graduate from Rhode Island School of Design, with a passion to push the boundaries of technology and design. I am a motivated and inquisitive individual ready to learn something new everyday. I love new adventures and crave to learn anything new. Sports, news, stocks, movies, shopping, technology, traveling...you name it and I'll improvise from there. I played the violin for 14 years before entering college, lead and participated in many dynamic and inspiring orchestras, played tennis, am a crazy fan of Ultimate Frisbee, fanatic of technology, had a dream about a unicycle... so I bought one, and above all else, love to eat and try a variety of foods (Food channels fault).

Her work deals quite a bit the overlapping themes of history, women, culture, mythology,and nature.

Well, I waited 'till the last minute and then tried to do an ENORMOUS painting. I would say it's 6 times as big as what I have been doing. It's a little too trite, and therefore needs to be well done to be good. But 2 hours is not long enough to make it be well done.

We will see, I may rework it, I may not. All depends on what it's new owner thinks.

Finally Home!

Well, I'm finally home from opening the new store in Indy. I'm pretty much exhausted and though I've published two drawings, I can honestly say that is almost more than I was up to. These two weeks we were supposed to do drawings so we could work on something bigger in the background, but that didn't really pull through for me.

I apologize for those of you that haven't been able to find the new work on the site. I'm not sure why it was all getting buried under old post dates, but I think I got everything shuffled back around.

Anyway, it's a quarter to Midnight and I have to work at 7am tomorrow, so time is running out. Hopefully I can pull something together for next post so you'll start your week off on a high note!

My bunny image isn't quite right because I had to scan it in as 2 separate images because it was too long. I think I will just take a photo of it so the seam and colors don't look mismatched. I am starting to get some more ideas and inspiration back this week. I think it helps to keep your brain busy, sometimes watching tv and the daily routine are slowly killing my brain cells. They haven't exercised much since graduating. I hate that it's easier to do nothing than set up challenges for myself, I guess that's how the driven get to where they are. Focus, determination, and fearlessness.

So it the Christmas season if you haven't noticed the retailers jamming it down your throat.Since we're in the retail business of sorts be sure to revisit our old posts to see what items haven't sold yet....Nothing like a unique gift of handmade art!Pass the word on to friends and family.Especially those that are trying to buy for a difficult person.

Hotel Room Artwork

For some reason working a normal week of all 8-5 days is much more exhausting when you come home to a hotel room. I'm sure it's because sleeping in a strange bed and eating out don't help a person feel very put together... But it seems reasonable to think that if you're in a hotel room with nothing to do you would get MORE done than you normally do at home when you can putz around with all your belongings.

Anyway, I appologize for the quality of the image. Working from a hotel room requires using my cell phone as a camera for the image. Not the best quality ever. HaHa. I can't wait to get home, and get started on something a little more "intense" than a pencil drawing!
